Facts about Manatee



 

Manatees are also known as Sea cows. There are 3-4 species of Manatees, the Amazonian manatee, the West Indian manatee and the West African manatee. They are also one of the slowest aquatic mammal on Earth. They almost look like Dugongs, which are also in the same order of the manatee called the Sirenia. They are herbivores and feed on weeds, aquatic plants, hydrilla and water lettuce. They are found in the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Amazon basin and West Africa. They are vulnerable and are threatened by human activities like habitat destruction and human objects. They have relatives which are elephants.
